The sun was dipping in the sky again and the caravan kept pressing forward. Janis didn’t mind pushing fast and hard. For her, she wouldn’t have stopped at all except to sleep for a few hours during midday. Traveling at night was always more effective in her opinion, but then again, she normally traveled alone. Right now, their group contained around twelve men and women. They had left Terris Green with a larger group, but just yesterday they split off into three groups to approach T’Arren Vale from different directions to account for Watchlight’s likely approach. Evenir knew the general direction of their opposition’s lair, so they anticipated they’d be traveling from the north, but what they couldn’t account for was all the operatives that were already out of their base.

Gone are the days when I could be alone during travel, she thought.

Trying not to mourn the loss of the past, she focused on the path before them, shifting energy into her senses to listen and see things that others might not. The sun was getting lower, darkening the forest around them slowly. Regardless, it was still teeming with life from the animals and bugs that normally roamed during the day. A steady sound from her left indicated a small river that flowed from one of the mountains nearby, probably ending at the sea, far beyond them to the east. Janis knew that it would turn away from their path soon, and she was glad. Perhaps then her hearing could be more effective. The constant bubbling of the water was starting to bother her.

Janis had traveled this route many times. Staying near the brook was advantageous for many reasons, but the primary reason for her was ironically the noise. She was a fairly silent traveler herself, but having the extra mask on her tread allowed her to move just a bit quicker. The unfortunate side effect was that it also masked potential ambushers. Despite this, Janis was pleased that Alsry led them this way. It showed their leader’s sense for stealth was much better than Janis expected. Thinking of Rivelen and Yurrin, she shook her head. Based on how they were always loudly lumbering around Evenir’s base, apparently neither had any stealth abilities whatsoever. She marveled how they had received the positions which they held.

Earlier, Alsry had ordered the whole group to be silent. No speaking of any kind. The hooves of their horses clopped fairly loudly, sure, but minimizing the noise would ensure that they were less likely to be heard and more likely to hear something around them.

“Paltrel, what do you See?”

Janis turned her vision to an unassuming man. He was of average build, had common light brown hair, and dark brown eyes. His nose was a bit crooked, as if he’d run into a wall as a child and it stuck that way. Thick brows covered his large eyes, which glowed with a steady blue.

“I See no danger ahead in the forest. But—”

He paused, pressing his lips into a fine line.
